The Flying Starship Simulation
To compete in today's business environment, companies have to be successful on several fronts: quality improvement, cost management, speed to market, customer and employee satisfaction. Many companies have been pursuing these results by transitioning from traditional, functionality based operations to a cross-functional,"high performance" orientation. Yet, while the strategy is sound, effective implementation remains an ongoing challenge. The Flying Starship Simulation provides an experience of doing the change right!
What Is It?
The Flying Starship Simulation places participants in one of nine manufacturing roles during the first two productions runs of a factory. The "Starships" built by the company have been a huge success so far and the factory's customer will purchase as much quality as can be produced.
The challenge of coordinating the work system to satisfy a customer with high quality standards pushes the organization to its limits. After measuring its results , the organization is launched on a process to redesign itself in order to satisfy it's customer and employees.
Based on a variety of data gathering and analysis--from financial results to the work system to the 'people side'- the organization moves towards a high performance orientation. Emphasis is placed upon understanding and redefining work in response to customer requirements, addressing quality of work life and job satisfaction issues, and the value of developing effective measures in support of a whole systems approach to work redesign.
The simulation draws upon current perspectives in work redesign, and while serving as effective teambuilding and development vehicle, creates a compelling"practice field" for developing the thinking and competencies needed to reshape whole systems.
Who is it For?
The Flying Starship Simulation is for departments, teams and organizations looking to accelerate the planning and implementation of process improvement and work redesign. The simulation enables participants to transfer their learning's into real life applications and next steps in their own workplace improvement efforts. The simulation has been used effectively in a variety of sectors worldwide--from service to manufacturing, from high tech to healthcare.
How is it used?
The Flying Starship Simulation is offered as a stand alone 1-1 1/2 day workshop for groups ranging from 15-35 people,e; multiple factory designs have accommodated up to 300 people. An abbreviated 1/2 day awareness and teambuilding version is also available.
