Specimen Collector Certification Program

SAMI's collector certification program is designed to ensure collectors have the knowledge, skills, and tools to accomplish a urine specimen collection that meets the requirements of the U.S. Department of Transportation and Department of Health and Human Services regulations for workplace drug testing. Because the training program is a "self-paced" curriculum and can be completed at the collector's worksite, it reduces the costs (time and money) associated with sending personnel for off-site training.

The SAMI collector certification program includes:

• A 42-minute professionally produced training video, which details the specimen collection process step-by-step
  
• A workbook and resource guide on everything from A to Z about specimen collections
  
• Practical exercises for learning and reinforcing collector skills
  
• A laminated template to check the custody and control form for errors and omissions
  
• A multiple choice written examination for certification
  
• Photo ID, display-quality certificate, National Collector Registry listing

The SAMI program sets a "standard of practice" for specimen collection. Well-trained, confident collectors perform more accurately and efficiently. Each collection is done the same way every time so that challenges to the procedures are easily dismissed.

The SAMI program is ideal for clinics, physicians' offices, hospitals, urgent care centers, laboratory patient service centers and employers who collect urine specimens for applicant or employee drug testing. The materials are appropriate for both non-medical and medially trained personnel. The videotape, resource manual, and custody and control template provide excellent tools for refresher training and quality control checks each time a specimen collection is conducted.
