DATATRAK International's Web-based training module receives award for excellence

DATATRAK International, Inc. (Nasdaq: DATA) the leading and most experienced Application Service Provider (ASP) in the Electronic Data Capture (EDC) industry announced today that it was recently recognized by the Society for Technical Communication (STC) as a recipient of an "Award of Excellence" for its innovative Web-based training module developed for the Company's Version 2.2 of DATATRAK Entry(TM). DATATRAK Entry(TM) is the software application that physicians and research coordinators access via the Internet and use worldwide to enter clinical trial data in all therapeutic areas of research for the pharmaceutical industry. The training program, developed in partnership with MediaPro, Inc. of Bothell, WA, received this distinction in the Tutorials/Training category from the STC Puget Sound Chapter's 26th Annual Online Communication Competition. The DATATRAK Entry(TM) training module was one of 203 candidates, which showcased the work of over 600 authors and artists. STC is an individual membership organization made up of 25,000 experts who are dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of technical communication -- the largest organization of its type in the world.

The Web-based training module for DATATRAK Entry(TM) allows investigators and coordinators to train remotely and independently from the comfort of their home or office via an intuitive, audio-enabled, auto-tutorial which automatically tracks user comprehension of the application. Web-based training is very cost-effective for sponsors of clinical research and is a critical component of the FDA guideline, 21 CFR, Part 11, since proper training is to be performed and documented for each user of electronic systems in the clinical trial process. Alternatives to Web-based training include physical, face-to-face meetings, which elevate sponsor costs and more-than- likely delay progress in clinical trial enrollment and completion. Moreover, turnover of personnel within a clinical trial is the norm and the ability to train an individual remotely and on command allows a clinical trial to advance uninterrupted from the EDC standpoint.

The Company is currently upgrading this Web-based training module to support the release of DATATRAK Entry(TM) Version 3.1, which is to be released in the spring of 2001.

"We are very honored to receive this award from STC," stated Dr. Jeffrey A. Green, President & CEO of DATATRAK International, Inc. "Training is a significant scalability and federally-regulated requirement of all EDC clinical trials and our ability to deploy and quantitatively characterize training remotely offers our customers significant timing and cost advantages over manual alternatives."
