Basic Skills Tests (BST)
PSI's Basic Skills Tests identify top candidates for clerical, administrative, and customer service jobs — positions that require verbal, numerical, reasoning, and perceptual skills.
Select tests to form batteries customized to meet your needs. Job-specific batteries have been developed for seven job families, or use a convenient Basic Four-Test Battery which covers all key abilities.
Demonstrated Validity
Criterion-related validity studies and validity generalization support the validity of the BSTs for predicting performance in clerical occupations. Three major multi-employer criterion-related validation studies involving 62 organizations demonstrate the empirical validity of the BSTs across clerical positions. Statistical comparisons show conclusively that test scores are positively related to job performance. Generalized validities range from .27 to .34 for individual tests, with the validity of the four-test Basic Clerical Battery of .41.
Job-Related
Test content is based on PSI's on-the-job task analysis of 12,000 clerical positions in 25 organizations throughout the United States. Test questions involve language and situations commonly encountered in business and industry.
Unbiased
Special attention was paid to ensure that questions did not contain material that might be offensive on the basis of race or gender. Extensive analyses of data conducted during the criterion-related validation studies demonstrated that the tests are unbiased with respect to race and gender.
Quick and Easy Validity Link-Up Study Available
A transportability study can be conducted to support the use of the BSTs in your organization. PSI's procedure links your jobs to our consortium job analysis and validity data, following the Uniform Guideline requirements for transporting validity.
Administration & Scoring
Fast, Simple Administration
Instructions to test administrators and to examinees are straightforward and easy to follow. Most tests take only 5 minutes. Each test is in a self-contained booklet which includes instructions, examples, test questions, and answer spaces. Computer administered and scored forms are available.
Easy to Score and Interpret
The BST tests are designed for easy hand scoring. Scoring instructions in the Administrators Guide are brief and simple. Optically scannable forms are available. National norms based on over 2,550 clerical/customer service/ administrative workers facilitate the proper interpretation of test scores.
